Still with those two dogs
I lay there with the two dogs,
watching them sleep on the floor
in the hallway.
The older one stretched up
and then lay down again,
and I saw the tiredness
in his scrawny legs,
and saw the scraggliness of his coat
which happens to old dogs.
I thought about him as a puppy,
how energetically he chased
my brother and me from room to room,
and we would jump up together on the big chair,
- since we were little too -
as he came rushing in.
He's really lasted a long time,
hasn't he?
Despite the way we all
ignore him a little more lately,
despite years of sleeping in hallways,
despite the advance of age,
he keeps living well.
The other dog isn't as old
and isn't as spirited.
If he didn't have
the first dog for company
(I think of them as brothers)
he wouldn't make it.
The younger dog
is fatter than I remember him
and he whimpers as I pet him.
Then I woke up
and remembered:
those dogs died
a long time ago.
But,
I guess I'm still there sometimes,
still pleased to be with those dogs,
to be just another living thing,
resting in some random spot,
not left out of the tapestry of life,
not forgotten,
bur preserved by the fleetingness
of the moment.

What My Daughter Will Learn From D&D
I dreamed
that someone
interviewed me
about
what my daughter
would learn from
playing D&D.
I told him
I didn't have
a daughter,
but I would
imagine...
"Well, to start with,
D&D was a product
of its times. It was
a cooperative game.
It couldn't be made
today.
When you are playing,
and solving problems
in the game,
you get to feel
intelligent,
and when you fail
a savings throw for
climbing an ice wall,
hopefully you will feel
brave but unlucky.
In the end,
you get to find out
who you really are,
or want to be.

Quark Dreams
I had this dream
that I was explaining to Robby
that when electrons jump from state to state,
they sometimes emit photons.
I woke up
and thought about
that living beings
are made of the same stuff,
like electrons and protons,
as other matter,
and that
all those weird quantum things
apply to the underpinnings
of our own selves.
Do we emit photons
every once in an improbable while?
do our protons ever decay?
do we have junk DNA and multiple back up RNA
to compensate for quantum randomness
that might disturb our
cellular reproduction?
I pictured us
as glowing collections
of subatomic particles,
heat, trapped and controlled
by elaborate methods,
like neurons and DNA.

Somebody Else
He used to be somebody else,
but he rarely remembered who,
and even then
it was more of a feeling or a dream
than a clear memory.

That Long-Dead Dog
I keep dreaming about
that
dog
that
long-dead
dog.
Rushing to attack
the post officer,
in a strange ranch house,
struggling to escape
my restraining grasp.
He is like symbol,
or a message
that I don't understand.
Nobody liked him,
but I guess
I liked him
more than I thought.

That Other Room
That other room
or wing
or floor
always hidden,
always new.
Reclusive,
expansive,
safe.
It shows up
in dreams
over and over
this secret inner life
of buildings
turning formerly
static places
into neverending
caverns or labyrinths.
There's an extra stairway
or bathroom,
often bathroom,
huge, steamy,
empty bathroom
with the showers
all running,
or stairway
that goes nowhere
or is too large
or too long,
or it's
an oddly shaped room
on a new floor,
sometimes in a basement
or sub-basement.
On and on
again and again
over and over
in dreams.

the deepest dreams
Sometimes it only lies
in the deepest dreams,
the creosote dollars,
the flat sand
I don't know what it means
but I'm saying it anyway
I don't know what it means,
but the water is running clean,
free from the sodium pentathol
free at last!
from the sodium pentathol
I don't know what it means
I never know what it means
but there's a fountain in the wilderness
and they're all coming to drink
while the stones crumble away

Dream Roads (June 23 2007)
Walking down a familiar dirt road,
I feel content,
and then I realize
I have never been there before -
except in other dreams,
and that there's a whole
landscape I visit over and over
in dreams (and memories of other dream roads)
and then I realize
even those memories
are dreamed up.

Down A Long River (Sept 16, 2008)
There's that far away place,
usually down a long river,
where you can dive off the rocks
and go for a swim,
but you don't know exactly where it is,
or how to get there,
only that it is wonderful and mysterious,
and you've been there many times,
at least in these dreams,
and it might not always be the same place physically,
but it has the same feeling,
the same empty watery feeling,
the same rocky primal feeling,
and sometimes it is the river,
and sometimes there's a powerful tall waterfall you are swept over,
or maybe jump over,
and sometimes it's a huge steamy bathroom
with tons of empty showers running
but it's really the same place somehow
and sometimes the showers are right near a pool
which is by a waterfall
which leads you out into the wilderness
and to that rocky diving spot,
or below an ancient temple,
and you're not sure if it's ominous there or not,
but you remember other times,
in dreams that are similar,
sliding down crazy water slides that go underground,
and swift-currented rivers you are propelled along,
and on and on,
until you wake up.
