We’ve Walled-up our Hearts

We’ve walled-up our hearts
We’ve assumed our secret identities
We’ve invested wisely for the future

We’ve left love
    in safety deposit boxes
        around the country

Side by side
    at the tag sale,
        we say nothing

Face to face
    at the supermarket
        we glance in opposite directions

Back to back
    against the on-rushing night
        we feel deeply alone
